Slightly random question (there is a reason) but any personal recommendations for Lidos that are either still open or closed but still in existence, or stories or personal anecdotes attached to Lidos. I've just had a suggestion put to me which I'm quite keen on and i'm trying to grow the initial idea. x

This is the northernmost lido in the uk:

There are various sites listing the best etc and I'm sure you've checked this page...

Let us know if your idea grows.
Toorak, this at is my neck of the woods, I was just about to mention it, also Peterhead has a Lido too?
So funny, we were both posting about the same place?!!
Peterhead Lido is actually called such, but isn't an open air pool, the name is given to the harbour and beach area

Thank you all. Oooh curiouser and curiouser about Peterhead.
I'll certainly let you know if anything comes of it, but I'm quite keen on the idea thus far. I think Lidos are rather nostalgic and romantic and very sad and haunting when derelict, bit like old fairgrounds, but would like some personal stories people know attached to specific ones if possible x
The person to contact for information about closed lidos (and probably quite a few open ones too) is Anne Green Jessel

(Explore that site to find loads of information on the subject)
My school was right beside this lido:

And no matter what the weather, we has to go swimming in freezing cold water. It was lovely on hot days and packed.
I believe the one at Ilkley is quite good.
Here in Suffolk, Beccles Lido is immensely popular on hot sunny days:

This one is still very much open and thriving. They do moonlight dips too. http://www.hamptonpool.co.uk/

Yay thank you, all very interesting x
I recall the local Kingsbury lido about 100yds from our maisonette. My Dad taught me to swim there. In the summer (1950s)Mum used to pack a picnic and we spent the day there. One day I decided to demonstrate to Mum and Dad,for the first time, my skill at diving. Problem was, although a good dive it was in the shallow end. Ouch.
I recall a 1d Brylcream dispensing machine and mirror by the exit turnstile.
Here in Plymouth we have Tinside, an art deco pool that was restored, then reopened in 2005. It has Listed building status.

I don't know if this is of any use to you but I enjoyed reading it. :-)

I'd forgotten we have another lido at Mount Wise...I don't know its history though.

Spent a lot of time here as a child, living in London it was like a day at the seaside.
