I was watching a cookery programme the other day and an American chef said to add beef broth. Is that the same as our beef stock?

yes, a clear stock.

Ah, thanks AuntLydia.
Hmmm.

There are plenty of web references which suggest that 'stock' is unseasoned but 'broth' isn't. e.g. https://www.thekitchn.com/whats-the-difference-between-stock-and-broth-word-of-mouth-71199

However this website, which sells US products to a European market, describes 'Campbell's Beef Broth' as "this delicious beef stock", which (together with the list of ingredients) suggests that the terms are actually interchangeable.

very much so....

I read that first link before I asked but I was no further forward. Your second link is interesting though. I've never seen that on the shelves and we are in Europe aren't we ;) .
So where do get clear stock from over here? Would something like Bovril do the job?
Most Supermarkets sell stock in either pots or pouches, eg...

Trust me,American beef broth is clear beef stock. Any stock cube or ready prepared stock you can get in a supermarket will do. Personally I would not use bovril but would use an oxo cube.
waitrose do good stocks - my advice is watch the sodium (Na) levels as some of them out there can be incredibly salt-laden.....and that you should avoid, health-wise....
In the uk Campbells Beef Stock is called Beef Consomme and you can find it in Waitrose

Good tip DTC. I've been warned to cut down on the salt.
Thanks all.
British Beef Broth is definitely different to the Us version!

Sorry, just back from helping a neighbour to test drive a Lidl Western Gold.
That looks like the ideal thing DTC. Do you know if it is resealable or freezable? Reason I ask is I would use half of that or have to make twice as much of the meal (not a problem).
The recipe, remember it was American, called for a cup of beef stock. As far as I can gather that equates to 237mls but I stand to be corrected.
>>> Do you know if it is resealable or freezable?

From DTC's link: "Suitable for freezing" (It's to the right of the image)
Err - I have two stocks in my freezer - chicken and beef. They were pretty expensive but I had heard they were beautiful.

Now I haven't a clue why I bought them. Could anybody tell me what I could do with them. Thanks

Sorry to I'm Lost Again - for digressing.

Oh good grief!! That Western Gold is better than I thought it was.
Thanks Buenchico. I feel silly now.
