If someone chooses to be a vegan and deny themselves the rich variety of food on offer that's up to them. However, I'm more than fed up with newspapers pushing veganism etc. There's now a vegan pub in Hackney apparently where they call dishes things like vegan "chicken" - if vegans so despise meat-eaters why on earth do they want to call a dish by a meaty name?

How can you tell a person is a vegan when you first meet them, just wait five minutes.
I've got absolutely no intention of becoming a vegan, or vegetarian for that matter, so I just ignore it.
Vegan chicken? That's just daft. The secret to vegetarian and, I suppose, to vegan cooking is specifically not to try to replace the meat.
reminds me of the joke
" why did the vegan cross the road"
" to tell everybody walking on that side of the road he was vegan"
Vegetarian sausage is an oxymoron.
My daughter is vegan and doesn't despise meat eaters.
I'm a big meat eater and don't despise vegans.
I'm a meat eater but I am a tad fearful of what is being injected into our meat to plump it out.

Dairy is much maligned whereas "healthy" non-dairy milk alternatives, packed full of highly toxic carageenan, are sold to us as the "healthier" choice.

Each to their own don’t wanna eat vegan don’t!! I have yet to meet a vegan who hates meat eaters!!
lets be honest what another person eats what's it go to do with us!
I agree Voltage but they do (Holier than thou) insist on letting us know, I'm a total omnivore but don't go around boasting about it.
Exactly voltage
What about all the vegans you meet but never mention it, Arksided? You wouldn't know.
Who are all these vegans that go around telling everyone that they are vegan - I've never met one !!
Vegans should go live on Vega! ;-)
My daughter carries jiggers of non-dairy milk with her so she can enjoy a cuppa anywhere with anyone without making a fuss.
I wish I could be a vegan. Ive worked on a farm and seen the cruelty that goes on to get our pork chop to the plate. Last year, I tried a vegan diet for a week. The difference in the way I felt was unbelievable...better digestion etc, but I was constantly hungry.

//if vegans so despise meat-eaters//
Ive known loads of vegans and vegetarians (one of my ex's was a vegetarian) but never known one that despises meat eaters. Just the thought of eating meat.
If your only motive is to stop eating meat then you could be pescarian, nailit. Eat dairy, eggs and fish.
//If someone chooses to be a vegan and deny themselves the rich variety of food on offer that's up to them//
Go into a supermarket and count up how many different varieties of fruits, nuts, legumes, veggies, salads etc there are against how many different types of meat that are sold. Much more variety in the vegan foods. Just needs a little imagination. My ex veggie girlfriend made dishes that I would never have dreamt of on my own.
hc, this is a little bit weird because for the past week or so ive been researching various vegan/vegetarian diets. I really hate eating meat because I know just how that animal has been treated for its entire life on a farm. Think that I could manage been a vegetarian but been vegan takes a lot more research into bodily needs (vitamins etc) to stay healthy.
According to the Observer today, a customer at the new
Spread Eagle pub in Hackney said that

"in 5 years time, the places that are selling meat will be the odd ones out"

More wishful thinking. Veganism is just a fad, which will never attract anything other than a small, but vocal minority.

Best ignored.
