I use 500g for 3 hearty portions plus a bit left over for lunch the next day. They are very hearty, though.
Without the need to weigh, pasta usually doubles in size when cooked.
Carluccio says...

//How much pasta?
For small portions, for a starter, allow 50g dried or 90g fresh pasta per person. For normal portions, for a lunch with a salad, say, cook 70-80g dried or 100-110g fresh pasta per person. Everything depends, of course, on the quality and the shape of the pasta, and on appetite.//
Depends what you consider hearty.

When I look at portion recommendations I wonder how it's suppose to fill a grown up.

I would probably cook the whole pack. If you put any left overs into cold water you can reuse it.
Danny - Pasta doesn't double in size.
Yes it does.

This is a 500g packet of dried whole wheat fusilli. I'll use 3/4 of the packet and if there's any left over it can be the base of a salad tomorrow.
Thank you all for your answers.
If it actually doubled in size, your family sized lasagne could reach into next doors kitchen.
It doubles in weight not size and the reason it doubles in weight is because of water absorption.
How hearty is hearty ? The packet suggests 75 gms each. I often use 100 gms. One could use more if desired/hungry. Maybe go for 3 lots of 150 gms (450 gms) ?
I use about 100 grams per person.
I chuck a bit in the boiling salted water, peer into the pot and chuck a bit more in.
That'll be 3 on-the-road-to-obesity portions. I would only use 60g per person.
be judgemental why don't you?
Woofgang - that wasn't being judgmental. It was purely to stop someone cooking too much.
IMO "on the road to obesity" takes it out of the helpful and puts it squarely into the judgemental
...but they won't be cooking "too much"....they're using what's not used the following day.....
Not everyone overeats!
