Went to our local Chinese restaraunt with friends tonight. As usual food was excellent.
We went specifically because it was their New Year and we thought it would be fun.
There was no atmosphere. A few red decorations and nothing else. I don't know really what I expected, but something was lacking.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful. It was just another ordinary night down the Chinese.

To be fair, it's no fun working new year.
How odd Caran :/

The Chinese tend to celebrate new year with their families. I have been in Beijing for New Year and everywhere was closed (apart from the local supermarket) I got back from Hong Kong last week and although there were a few symbols about which were alluding to new year, there wasn`t much going on.

I don't know what I expected. A conga line of geisha girls might have livened things up a bit.
Geishas are Japanese!!!
Geisha girls are Japanese but anyway, Chinese New Year isn`t a big thing in this country (apart from the parade in London next weekend)
I imagine if they had provided entertainment the cover price would have gone up - should have taken some party poppers with you ;-)
We only ever took my Mum to a Chinese restaurant once, we almost got thrown out when she burst into a chorus of this - only had one Brandy and Dry too :-(

No paper dragons ? Maybe they've Anglicized the celebrations.
I haven`t seen any paper dragons in Hong Kong/China. The typical NY decoration is a hanging red fan which symbolises good luck.
They maybe weren't actually Chonese people, maybe they just cook Chinese dishes.
Kong hee fa choy! (sp...)

Spot on there dotty. Both waitresses were English. But they were very friendly and made the effort to say happy new year when we came in.
half their staff may be stuck at the railway station...

Amazing jno. Glad we don't have queues like that!
Went to the casino in Cardiff a couple of years ago on what turned out to be Chinese NY. They (the Chinese community, not the casino) put on a big free spread and more importantly, for me, a free bar.
