Can anyone please put a name to a variety of plum that I recently tasted? It was large, shaped like a rugby ball, coloured mid to dark red. It was sweet and juicy and was grown in England.

This picture is of the definitive English plum - the Victoria.

I don't think it was a Victoria plum that you ate as they are reddish-pink and green (and delicious)

I've also tasted one similar in colour to what you described buty don't know what it was I'm afraid.

Another delicious one at this time of year is large and purple in colour (not a Damson)

Victoria's usually come into season around August. They make the most luscious pies but are  so sweet they are mostly eaten raw. The colour does vary from mid pink to purple.
