I am going to make some apple chutney and one of the ingredients (which I do not have and have never used) is paprika. Can anyone tell me what this is and what sort of flavour it has? Can I substitute anything else?

Hot and spicy.....tobasco ? But a soupçon !!
It's ground chilli peppers, and there are lots of different sorts.

The main types are hot and sweet. I use a lot of smoked paprika.

In an apple chutney, I'd use the sweet variety, but not a lot.

Perhaps a small drop of Tabasco would do the job?
If you have not got any of the alternatives it only cost about £1 and is quite versatile, worth having in the storecupboard.
whe I'm out of paprika I use cayenne pepper - similar to paprika

Thanks everyone. Sorry I didn't answer yesterday. My computer is on the blink and wouldn't let me do anything. Anyway, I have bought some paprika, so here goes and hopefully it will turn out all right.
Paprika is one of my favourite spices....and I wouldn't describe it as "hot" at all.....it's more "warm and comforting". Now you have it, try a beef goulash when the cold weather comes along...absolute favourite.

Thanks ginge, I will certainly do that.
I find paprika actually tasteless.
That is really an very good new way to and it really tastes well too.
