My mum used to use the old style twisted metal meat skewers. Unfortunately, she threw them out when she moved house and now I want one to test when cakes are cooked properly. I know you can get skewers with twists but the twists are on the wrong end of the skewer or they are too pronounced. Has anyone seen them anywhere? I was thinking junk shop but they are all antique shops around here and they wouldn`t have anything like that.

Thanks OG. I`ll ask but I`m not holding out much hope. Most people seem to use the long, thin, modern skewers. I might put a "wanted" on Freecycle and see if I get any luck.
We use a straight metal skewer for testing cakes, is there an advantage to using a twisted one??

ethandron - I thought it might be easier to see if the cake is cooked as some of the mixture would be captured in the curley bits of the skewer. I just use a knife and the moment but it`s quite hard to tell if the cake is cooked because there isn`t any residue on the knife.
I see what you mean, but the cake mix does stick to a straight skewer if it's not cooked. Hope you find what you're looking for :)
I have a spare one if you want me to send it to you. If interested will post a email address for you 237SJ

Grasscarp - thank you, that is so kind of you. I`m going to a BBQ later and the host says she has what I need (I think she does her fruit kebabs on the BBQ with them) Thanks again.
I find a metal knitting needle does the job well, if you happen to have one.
