My grandmother says that according to the Turkish news, sharon fruit from Israel is being poisoned. I've tried googling but I can't find anything about this story anywhere. Has anyone heard this news? I'm hoping its not true as I'm addicted to them!

Is Israel the only place that grows them?
Question Author
Not sure where they're grown but the ones from Lidl where my mum gets them from are from Israel.
I hope it's not true either, I also love them! They're 3 for a £1 in Sainsburys and/or Tescos at the moment.
"Sharon fruit" is the marketing name for the Israeli-grown variety of persimmon.
I'm sure persimmons are available from elsewhere. I have not heard of and can not find any reference to them being poisoned (why would they be?). Possibly just anti-Israel propaganda.
Grown widely in Albania though not sure if they export them. Free for all, just go and pick one off any tree. Same with figs, grapes and pomegranates. Took bad when I came home and had to pay for them!!
I love them too, I've only recently discovered them - they are 3 for £1 in Morrisons too.

Do you eat the skins? someone told me you can - but I only ever peel them at the moment.
There's nothing on Google about poisoning that I can see as yet.....
Did find this about fruit with high than permitted pesticide levels.

It might have come from this blog post about persimmons that need to be really really overripe before eating....scroll down to the end.

Yes boxtops you can eat the skins. However, be careful to chew them fully as they can stick in your throat and it's not pleasant.
I peel them until there's a bit of skin left and I use the skin to hold on to while I eat the rest of the fruit, messy but fun! :c)

Thats probably what my grandmother has seen Calibax. don't know where she got the Israel bit from. If there was a poisoning issue then I'm sure there would have been something on google. I think my grandmother has got the wrong end of the stick.

I eat them with the skin like an apple. I've eaten the a bit unripe and the skin does make your mouth go dry. Not doing that again!
Someone I used to work with thought you could eat the skins on kiwi fruit - the skin brought her mouth out in a dreadful rash!

Oh dear Boxy! Lol

Eating the skin of an unripe sharon fruit is similar to eating the inner skin of a banana.
I'm glad that's not true, I eat loads of them.
I always eat the skin, but I only eat them when they are ripe.
They're grown in Spain too.
