Scottish Cheeses

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that Scottish cheese is the culinary equivalent of rocking horse dung.

Having visited a number of delis, farm shops and supermarkets all I have come up with so far is some decidedly average cheddar.

I know full well that there are some fantastic Scottish cheeses but they are being kept firmly North of the Border!

Even more annoyingly I rang a producer this morning to make place an order and they can't guarantee that I'll get my order before Saturday!

Today will be spent searching the web as so far I've been disappointed with the offerings from the Usual Suspects in cheese mongering!

Thanks Mazie, I found their website but was so incensed when I spotted they had a 50% mark up on the retail price on at least one of the cheeses that I stubbornly refused to place an order with them on principle!

Principles can be such a pain in the butt at times!
They certainly can Eccles...but I don't blame you.
Eccles we go here when we go up North and we have had orders delivered in the past. They are very good and they do have a selection of cheeses.... I'd give them a call.

Thanks Mazie, I'll give them a call once I've worked out how I'm going to make cock a leekie soup for 15 with just two leeks. Something has gone wrong with my veg order this week :-(
I'm no cook ecclescake but if you're short of one ingredient could you not add extra amounts of the others? EG, more cock.
Question Author
One can never have too much cock, unless one is making soup when balance is key ;-)
Eccles - suggest you get hold of voddie - her brother runs a deli/shop and on-line business..........
with 2 leeks for 15 pax, does the dish become cock-a-weakie?
Question Author
An excellent idea DTC, I'll give her a shout.

I can't serve cock a weakie there will be uproar and they'll demand compensation in whisky.........for the sake of a couple of leeks I'd rather preserve my stash of malts!
Do you need some Cornish leeks sending up to you - after all we are Celts and have our own kilts?
have you tried the rather salty and rotund Salmond i hear it's a corker.
Question Author
I dropped in at Newlyns farm shop today DTC and they had nothing at all:-(

I found can send me a few leeks I'll be most grateful, not hick tough'uns though I only have a little letterbox :-)

I found = If you. Predictive text is a bugger....
You have my e-mail ré address.....there's a good farm stand 2 miles away - how many do you need? I'll be in the PO tomorrow morning.
It could become quite a mouthful right enough, ec.
there is a JJ thread beneath mine here for Scottish cheese - she refers to Lanarkshire Blue in it, going for the wow factor. That is a nice cheese....if properly kept.
Best cheese I ever tasted came from the Isle of Arran, Scotland. Can't remember the name but it was served on a platter with other varieties all equally delicious.

Cheddar cheese with Arran Oakcakes. Yum yum.
Scottish cheese? Try Aldi. I buy their 'Glen Lochy specially selected Scottish Vintage Cheddar', 250 gms. Flavour level 6! (Not many cheddars are so intense). It's a white cheddar with loads of 'bite'.
Question Author
Thanks Heathfield but I am actually after a selection for a cheese board.

I think I have found somewhere that has what I am after, unfortunately the road there was closed this morning due to a fire, fingers crossed I have better luck tomorrow!
