Buy rib eye steak instead and learn how to cook it properly. You'll never eat sirloin again.

thanks ethandron will try rib-eye
oven cook with onions and mushrooms...
Make sure you let it rest too (I always thought it was a load of old toffee but it does makes a huge difference).
Thos, google how to cook steak properly, it makes a huge difference :)
The rarer it is cooked, the better it tastes, try it!
rump steak is tastiest
Tambo, have you tried rib eye? Much nicer :)
I cook my sirloin very simply. I buy from a very good butcher and make sure it is thick - 3/4" minimum, roughly weighing 12oz.
I take it out of the fridge at least two hours before cooking.

Melt butter and a little olive oil in a frying pan and when it is hot season steak with salt and pepper. Fry for 3 minutes one side, turn over, fry for two minutes on the other. It should be nicely browned on both sides now.

Put on hot plate and leave for at least two minutes.

If you prefer your steak more cooked through, turn the heat down and cook for a further minute or two each side before taking out to rest.
Oh, and follow hc's advice, buy it from a butcher, you'll find that supermarket meet hasn't been hung for long enough. Ideally, 25-28 days.
I think a lot can depend on where you buy your meat from.
Loops, supermarket meAt!
You're so right, bluetoffee. The steak I buy looks almost black with plenty of marbling.

I could eat it now. By the way, I fry my mushrooms in the pan juices when I take the steak out to rest.
I think sirloin is tasteless and rump and ribeye have much more flavour.

I think fillet steak is also inferior to rump and ribeye
Guess what we'll be having for dinner tomorrow!
hc4361, I'm drooling. When do I get an invite?
My sirloin is not flavourless but I do enjoy rib eye too.

Shoulder steak can be wonderful if cooked in a roasting bag in the oven. I use a tenderiser on it lightly before cooking
When I was young and we were poor, I can remember the first time my mum bought us rump steak. We were all drooling at the smell as it cooked.
It was as tough as old boots and when we complained she said
"It should be tender, I cooked it for an hour"

I loved her, but she was a lousy cook
Restaurant steak is usually seasoned with something before cooking. A product used where I used to work was called 'Season All' it was basically salt, pepper and a hint of lemon all ground to a very fine powder. Plus restaurant steaks are usually cooked on a griddle or a char grill. The char grill gives it a it of a BBQ taste.
I just grill mine to medium rare and then let it rest for about 5 mins so all,the juices run out and then cook onions or mushrooms in the juices.
Friday night is steak night in our household and we always get it from a proper butcher not a supermarket.
