A friend of mine insists that some pubs he has worked in, which advertise a large selection of draught lagers, actually have only a few but connect the pipes to the same few types of barrels and give the impression that there is a lot of choice of lagers when in fact you are getting more or less a few brand names. Is this true?

I've never worked anywhere that did that.  If it was true it would be highly illegal - Trades Descriptions Act ain't for nothing!
I dont know what area you live in Dom but in Leeds it's common practice for Landlords to get rid of "guest" beers they cant sell by putting them into barrels of more saleable makes.

I cant think of any industry that has a lower reputation than the brewing industry.

Estate agents, landlords, second hand car salesmen!

This must be a practice in one-off pubs then.  The chains like Weatherspoons and Hogshead could never get away with it.  I know they rip you off in other ways though.

It could be true; if it were, the pubs would be guilty of "passing off", which is effectively infringement of the trademark of the lager brand, for example Budweiser, that the pub was selling non-Budweiser lager as.
