Have you tried it with salt?

I know it sounds a bit "wild Scottish highlands", but it's really lovely.

Once you've had it with salt, you'll never have it any other way.
its only sugar for me laughing-gravy x
Sorry I use honey................
and lots and lots of it. (I use maple syrup)

Will try that JJ, and Pusskin, mine used to be golden syrup !!
That's how I remember having it as a kid jj, big slab of butter and salt.

Scrummy!

Can't advocate the use of salt these days though (and the butter won't help the diet!) so maybe lo-salt or Canderel if you want to go with the sugar idea?

Maple syrup sounds blummin' luvly !! How does it compare calorie-wise to golden though ?
Porridge really isn't supposed to be sweet. Traditionally, in Scotland, it's made with water, not milk, and has salt on it.
I use honey. I know it is meant to be made with salt but the thought of salty porridge made with water makes me feel quite sick
I cook mine with salt 'til it's nearly a solid cake, then have it with soft brown sugar, cinnamon and milk.
You can leave out sweetener and put dried fruit in milky porridge. I often use sultanas or raisins to sweeten. Or don't use milk and use Soya milk instead.
I am diabetic & use Agave Nectar you'll love it.

I have raisins and sultanas in mine as well Lottie. I remember the bloody awful salty porridge my father used to make...............yuck.
Used to be Golden Syrup but I now use Manuka 15+ Honey. I've tried sweet and light Blossom Honey but the taste gets lost in Porridge somehow, but Manuka is perfect.

I used to hate the taste of honey but after trying again with different types, I have developed a real love for it.

Salt is ok but obviously there is far too much salt content in everything these days (along with sugar and fat), so I just avoid adding salt to anything as there is enough in my daily food already.

Hmmm now Maple Syrup......YUK!!! Too American for my taste buds, as they like everything sickly sweet.
That sounds very rustic, J.J. Can you make us all some if we all come round to yours for an "AB porridge morning"?
I make mine with water and add dried cranberries, blueberries and sultanas. Banana is good in porridge. Chopped apple and cinnamon is nice too :)
I use a bit of Molasses sugar-it has a strong flavour,so not so much is needed.
As for maple syrup versus honey...they seem to be equally as sweet.
Blob of jam - pop it in when it's hot - leave for a minute or two then mix through. I also like it with chopped banana - feel guilty though 'cos I'm a scot and we were brought up with it made with water :o(
I cook it with water...but add a dribble of cream to it...mmmm!
Dates are super and add flavour too.
