Unfortunately, most hard cheese is cow's milk. However all the major supermarkets do a hard goat's cheese which is quite nice, although mild. Waitrose big stores do a brilliant cheese selection. Just go for goat's or sheep's. One warning though, it is all expensive!
buffalo mozzarella might also be a possibility?
If you search for lactose free cheese there are quite a lot of them. She is broadly correct in her description of hard and soft cheese.
Not sure what the first two answers are about as the problem is lactose intolerance and all cheese from mammals contains it.
If someone is lactose intolerant they can sometimes be fine with other mammals milk products, such as goats and buffalos - dont ask me why, I dont know why, just that is can be that way

Lactose allergic is a different matter all together

cecil, why has your friends been told to try a lactose free diet? Dont forget it is hidden in many, many items, some you wouldn't even think it could be in so if they have to be strict, they must read all labels
apparently buffalo milk has a similar amount of lactose. I have been eating goat cheese after being recommended it . Now find that has lactose in it as well. So what is so bad about cow's cheese as compared. Does anyone know.
Maybe try vegan cheese (not that I ever have).
This is a lactofree website and has suggestions for cheeses and other substitutes your friend can eat. They are products which are available in the usual supermarkets too.

thank you everyone, i will look up these websites, my freind was told to try a lactose free diet as she had persistant diarrhoea, its just to rule it out, or otherwise, i think, i am surprised she was'nt offered tests instead of putting her through all this trial and error stuff, but what do i know? i'm no Doctor, maybe thats just the way its done, poor soul takes a magnifying glass shopping so she can read the ingredients on everything.
Anngel, I have no idea why but it's possibly the fact it is 'closer' in make up to breast milk
But if you can tolerate goats cheese I doubt there is a reason to stop eating it.
