I wasn't sure where to post this.
I have just cleaned my deep fat fryer. When I had my car, I would take it to the household waste recycling place. Since I sold my car, and it is not on a bus route, it is difficult to get there. I have put the old oil in a bottle. Would it be acceptable to just put the bottle of oil in my household refuse bin? If not, any sensible ideas on how to dispose of it?

I would... unless you have a nice neighbour who'd take it with theirs
Hmmm, I would never have thought to take it to the tip
Car oil yes, but fat fryer oil? no - mind you I dont have deep fat fryer lol
In a bottle/container of some sort in the normal bin if and when I use oil

I'd be interested in answers as well

I don't think my neighbours are too fussy about doing recycling. And, I'm embarrassed to say my brother puts his down the sink! He thinks washing up liquid and hot water makes it all OK.
as it is "vegetable" oil, wouldnt it just naturally decompose if you just dug a hole in the garden and buried it, without the bottle of course!

It probably would Ratter, but there is 2L of the stuff, and I change it every 3mths. I don't think it's a good idea really, but thanks anyway.
any left over oil from cooking I pour over bread for the garden birds . They love it.
I always make sure the cap is secure and put in wheelie bin which is acceptable to my local council.
Good idea...bread is a poor bird food as it is low energy the addition of the oil would make it much better for providing calories

Thank you all for your answers. I like the one about the bread - I will do that with small amounts in future.
I like the bird feeding idea - will use the small amounts of oil I put into the bin for that now

I always make fat balls or just soak bread crusts in any left over cooking fat or fat from frying etc. The birds will love you for it
Maybe in the winter, but at other times they should be gobbling up the grubs in the garden, not getting fat on bread & oil.
