Does anyone know why it is that newly bought malt vinegar from the supermarket turns cloudy within a few days? I'm talking about standard brown vinegar here. The vinegar can be seen to be quite clear when held up to the window after purchase, yet a few days later after opening, it appears cloudy. Is this cloudiness harmful?

thank you

It's 'mother of vinegar' starting to form, with the help of the oxygen which has been allowed to reach the vinegar. (It's harmless):

Chris
I've never had brown malt vinegar go cloudy like that.
Nor have I but how interesting.
Here in the U.S, many people use unfiltered, unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar for various health reasons. A popular brand (Bragg) is very cloudy and contains significant "mother".
We use it for anti-acid (50/50 with water) but others claim it's does wonders for ailments such as constipation, headaches, arthritis, weak bones, indigestion, high cholesterol, diarrhea, eczema, sore eyes, chronic fatigue, mild food poisoning, hair loss, high blood pressure, obesity, along with a host of many other ailments. Most are unproven...
Are you getting commission for promoting that product, Clanad?
I'd soon go broke, Chris... our local small grocery store has a few bottles on the shelf that have been there for most of a year... Still looks the same, of course...
We get similar claims for apple cider vinegar over here, Clanad. See item 20 in this list (from a UK website):

Oh, I see that it deals with apathy! If I could tolerate vinegar I might be tempted to try it. (The smell of any vinegar, even from the far side a room, is enough to make me feel extremely ill!)
We all, I suppose, have our health "tricks"... personally, I use the juice of one whole lemon in 1/2 cup warm spring water (can't be tap water) every morning... first thing... I'd need more than 63 items (how did they test number 63 for efficacy?) to list what I beleive it does for me... but to each his own...
