I was always led to believe that Black Pudding was not very healthy, but I noticed that the Black Pudding Sainsbury had was only 5% fat.

Surely this is relatively healthy compared to sausages and chips?

^^^actually it was 3% fat
Black pudding butties? Now I think of it that doesn't sound too bad.
It appears to be pretty good for you compared to many other things

>>Blood sausage
This food made it to my list for its name alone, but its name is only the beginning of the dreadful aspects of this food. Blood sausage -- sometimes referred to as black pudding or blood pudding -- is cooked pork meat mixed with beef blood, gelatin and spices. The blood is heated with the gelatin until it is thick enough to congeal.

Aside from the obvious reasons that make this food disgusting -- like the fact that it is made with congealed blood -- the stuff looks gross. Blood sausage is almost entirely black, which indicates the amount of concentrated blood that is cooked in it.

Okay, eating jellied black plasma is gross, but there are many redeeming health benefits to the stuff. Blood sausage is a very good source of protein and it is essentially carb-free, making it a perfect addition to your low-carb diet. Furthermore, there are relatively few calories in it, especially when compared with other types of sausage. Finally, blood sausage is rich in iron and zinc, two nutrients that are frequently missing from the average adult’s body.

So, if meat is your thing, and you’re ready for something entirely different, give blood sausage a try.<<

I copied this from somewhere else.

I love black pudding!!! :))
But it is revolting..... and absorbs a lot of fat when you fry it probably puts the percentage up into the high fat food category

rich in iron and other minerals I believe... also some vitamins...still wouldn't eat it
Oh you've made me hungry now, I'm to Tosco's in a minute and I've just had to put black pud on my shopping list.
OP, yep certainly sounds it! I was put off it years ago when I found out what it actually is made from, but love it!
Ratter, the best is made with virgins' blood - it has immense health benefits including making you live forever.
I never forget aupairing in France when they hung hares over a large bucket and bled them and made the sauce with all the blood. I had an omelette that night. But I love really rare bloody steak and I wouldn't be squeamish about eating black pudding, but I don't like it much.

Surely if you grilled the low fat variety it would still be only 3% fat. I can't think that it would be unhealthy at all.

I usually grill my BP, not fry.

I only asked 'cause the guy at the next desk just had a bacon, blackpudding, egg and mushroom cob (that's a roll or bun to you non-midlanders) and I was a bit jealous.
OMG! i'm drooling, that sounds awesome.
I prefer the term "pudding of colour". :P

You may be joking, Doug, but I'm sure the Daily Mail will have a story about it in the near future.
I love black pudding and eat it either grilled or as it comes. It is already cooked.
Bet it has plenty of iron in it.
It is nice raw. I have a problem with frying things so I either cook it in the oven or in my George grilly thing. White pudding are excellent too.
wolf - I know I'm showing my ignorance here, but what is white pudding?
I'm writing it at the moment Andrew. It starts "Senior officers in the Metropolitan Police have advised their in-house caterers to destroy all menus mentioning black pudding. The Black Police Officer's Association have said they see this as a subliminal threat and that management are trying to rid the force of non-white personnel............"
kiki - no idea, oats and stuff I think. I am sure that Andrew will tell us.

Andrew - 15 years!
Sorry no idea but I LOVE it! I'm sure a little now and again won't hurt :)

White Pudding is really just oatmeal, onions and suet (+ S & P0 cooked together.

Often called Mealy Pudding in recipes though I have never heard it called this in real life.

Best eaten when battered and deep fried.

Anyone know what Red pudding is though?

I remember seeing it on the menu in the chippies in Perth but never had one.
