I've got several bottles of wine that have been in store for ten years or more.

Before I post descriptions of the wines, are there any expert/knowledgeable ABers out there who could provide a reasonable assessment on whether they will still be ok or whether they will be undrinkable ?

Cheers.

The 85 Mouton - if kept well should be brilliant (and under 13C)- will keep longer - under your stair case well ok. The Vieille Ferme - questionable but drink now. It may well have lost a wee bit of its taste. It's a good honest robust wine that many French restaurants use. It's a good bottler in Perrin et Fils The Chemin des Mulets 1996 - yep ok but drink up - pretty...

The Chemin des Mulets 1996 - yep ok but drink up - pretty good year for the Chateauneufs...

Marques de Carano - should be fine - another Tesco special.

Chateau Jalouise 2002 is not a great year and the wine starts by not being that well balanced. However open and taste - may be good for a coq au vin.

The Grand Bertaud - a blended wine rather than a vineyard.....03 was a tricky year with mixed wines - some like Margaux and the northern vineyards came through ok, others were pretty grim. It's a Cote de Blaye and they got through reasonably okay - however 10 years is a fair time, so open it and see.

If the wine smells off and is black discard, if it is red (dark probably being a Blaye), decant it and let it breathe for an hour or two and then decide.

Your Patrie Cahors should be fine, a little earthy perhaps but ideal for a steak or stwe....not the best specimen of the Cahors though.

The Chateauneuf Marquis....keep - this is a £50 plus wine 2011 was an 8 out of 10 year so should be good....it wil be full bodied, rich and powerful red wine with baked forest fruit flavours, spicy notes and a classic peppery after taste.

Hope this helps

Great answers, folks, especially DTC.

Looks like I've got some serious quaffing to do - and I really do wish you could join me. The glasses will be well rinsed Lady-janine, and I'll let you wield your corkscrew with abandon.

Cheers to you all.

Yes Fred, absolutely ( but it's not my birthday til March). Yes I go to wine auctions and I know about wine and port because of a very close family friend, Phillipe Boucheron, who used to write for The Times and various other papers and magazines on the subject.
On the subject of the wine itself DT has answered handsomely;-)
