about a family living on 42k benefit. How can this be justified? Should they be forced to work? I would be interested to read your comments.

hi wy, unfortunately i can't open that link so cant see the details, however on the face of it, with no details whatsoever it does sound shocking. I am presuming it's not a couple with 1 child?
can you post another link please as that will not open

I think it's the couple with 7 children and one on the way. The husband gave up work years ago because he would be better off on benefits. They have a four bedroom council house and are waiting to for a bigger house.

In answer to your question. No, I couldn't live on 42k a year with 9, soon to be 10, mouths to feed, clothe etc etc....

My friend is 1 of 14 children...bar a few months between jobs over the years her parents have never claimed benefits. Her Dad worked really hard to support them and what they couldn't afford they didn't get.
redhelen is this the one from last week who packed his job in and has a mercedes people carrier
That's the Filth.

the only reason they can claim this amount is because of the kids. as brown says he is a family man and knows what a family needs.
Stories like this make me wonder why both me and my husband work.

People like this leech off the system and seem to have every mod con available, and then some, and we can't afford to half of them.
Boo I am sure you and your husband work because you have some pride! I don't know how the benefit system works but this is very unfair. It should be a personal choice how many children you have but you should not have that choice if you cannot afford to pay for them. I don't have any children because I never felt I could afford to stop working or at least cut back on the hours I do to earn a decent wage and give them a good lifestyle. Suits me now but who knows if one day I will regret it.
Surely the solution here is that there is a maximum number of children that the state will support in a family - say 4. You can have free choice to have as many over that number as you feel the need, but the maximum benefit provided is enough for 4 kids. Provide all the kids regardless of the number with free school meals and uniform and anything over and above is up to the parents. I am 1 of 7 and my parents always worked to support us. None of us has grown up to think that benefits is the way to live and none of the grandchildren in the family so far have done so either. You learn by example and what an example this lot are sending to their kids.

Twice!
I saw this too and all I can say is that no wonder a lot of people have a lot of anger towards people on benefits, this lot are just totally taking the mickey. Some people are genuinely on benefits for a reason and also do not particularly LIKE having to be on benefits...this family just make me annoyed and also look at the role model they are setting for their children.
I think this is distgusting.

I have recently had to go onto benefits for the first time in my life, and even then I struggled to stay in work for as long as I could.

December 2008 - Felt like a pulled muscle in the groin area
March 2009 - still felt like a pulled mucled but I had been taking it easy, warm baths after work etc

April 2009 - when climbing across the bed to get my book, my hip gives a REALY load CRACK! I scream (a very manly, deep scream.....more of a cough really...)... and I mean scream! Then curle up into a ball and cry, my girlfriend comes running in an says the obvious with a serious look on her face "I think its time you went to see the doctor!"

June 2009 - Doctor have seen me and sent me to a specialist who says that I have Large Hip Labral Tear that will require Arthroscopic Surgery.

August 2009 - I now need crutches to get around, the pain is intense and im prescribed morphine for the pain. At this time my work dont like me being there under health and safety grounds, they sign me off for two months in the hope that my op will have happened. I fight this decision and get allowed back to work after building suitable evidence from two doctors (my own and the one appointed by the work place).

September 2009 - I go for a consultation at the hospital where my op is to take place.

Continued ...

December 2009 - I have still heard nothing from the hospital about an op, and the number that I am given to call always goes straight through to answer phone that has a message that you can leave a message but they will not call you, you must call them back!?! I ask my doctor to find out what is going on.

Jan 2010 - I start the year going back to work but with in a couple of days I am in so much pain with the travleing and working that I agree its time to go off sick. My doctor recieved a reply from the hospital that said "we currently have a huge back log for arthroscopic surgery that wer can not make any promises as to when his opoeration will be"

February 2010 - Now on over 100mg morphine per day, plus ibuprofen and paracetamol. what with sick pay at £79ish per week my Disability living allowance and housing benefit, and council tax benefit plus the reduction in council tax (they have halfed it for me) I am nearly making what I was when working.

I doubt that I am claiming all the benefits that you can.... and to be honest I dont want to. I had to swallow my pride to do what I have done so far! but that said, I can see why the dossers of the world jump on it!
everything for nothing.

April 2010 - Now in wheel chair for anything further than the front door, now taking more than my prescibed amount of morphine because of the pain and just had the ghost of a rumour I may find out about an operation soon.

Sorry for the LONG rant but I have just joined and wanted you to know me ....as well as adding my two cents worth.
