How do I formalise what we've agreed for our separation

My husband and I have decided to separate, it's all very amicable (so far) but I want to formalise what we've agreed on - especially residency for our 3yr old daughter. I'd rather get legally sorted and fixed while we're still friendly but all the advice seems to point towards only seeking a Residency Order if you can't agree. My friend all but lost her children a few years ago because her husband subty turned them against her over a period of years (when she thought they were amicable) and because they had originally agreed joint custody (but not thru court) she couldn't even get access in the end. Me and my ex are friends at the mo and our daughter will live with me and see him at weekends but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I don't want this to cost me a fortune either!

What should I do first?

If you're not planning to divorce yet you can still have a 'Deed of Separation' which is legally binding. It doesn't cost much through a solicitor especially if you have all the details agreed in advance. Basically, they draw it up and you both sign. You can get a free half an hour at most solicitors to discuss costs etc beforehand. Good luck.
