We have a Golden Wedding party to go to this weekend and I wonder if any of you can come up with some ideas for a great present. At the moment we're stuck on a rose called Golden Wedding and a bottle of bubbly.

Champagne glasses, engraved- to go with the bubbly?
PS, love the rose idea, that's lovely :-)

Thanks Boo, I think the champagne glasses are a good idea although it's probably a bit late for the engraving.

I'm a Capricorn and therefore on the practical side so I have to confess, In a Pickle, I do find your idea a little bizarre. What would they do with their gold plated shoe and with the one that was left. But thanks both of you for taking the trouble to post suggestions.

get a family tree drawn up shoing all their living family and their parents and grandparents, use a picture one off the net, amazing

We were bought champagne glasses for our Ruby Wedding, but they've ended up in a cupboard & will probably never be used.

I think the idea of a 'Golden Wedding' Rose bush sounds lovely & much more practical. It's something they can watch bloom every year & will remind them of their special day.

Why not go for something different - wh smiths will sell you a piece of land in scotland that allows you to use the title lord and lady and its only about 30 so it will not break the bank
Vallium....?
A bird table - not golden but practical, pretty and useful.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - my head is spinning now!

I do like the idea of buying them a piece of land in Scotland and have looked this up. I wouldn't be able to organize it for the weekend but I could get the rose bush for then and the land idea, however long it takes. What a novel idea and how cool to phone up a restaurant and say you're the Laird of Glencairn. You may only own a foot of land but they're not to know.

I should perhaps have mentioned that the guy is an ex work colleague of my husband's and though I've met him and his wife many times, I don't know too much about their families so some of the ideas were a bit personal. I shall keep the Family Tree suggestion in mind for someone else in the future.

Thanks again everyone

The ideal present is something the couple actually want (even if it is a day trip somewhere). The gold bit can come in the wrapping paper, bows and/or label.

If they have a suitable garden rose lovely, Drink etc tends to be for ONE of the couple only.

If your budget runs to it 50 (or multiples thereof) to be soent on their choice. As pensioners they may be pleased to pay off a bill even.

Thanks Carrieann for your suggestions. I've bought two roses - Golden Wedding Celebrations and Golden Memories which were bottom wrapped and I've also gone with the piece of land in Scotland.

This is a couple not reliant on state pension who can pop off to Australia to see one daughter or to Greece to see another. Who are always going on little breaks and who probably have everything they need so the original gift was just the perfect thing.
