My brother told me that one of his old girlfriends was in his face during an argument and he pushed her away from him.

Yes, he was wrong.  I'm sure you wouldn't like someone stronger than you pushing you about.

What else do you want him to do?  Hit her?

I abhor violence toward ladies, but not all women are ladies.

Fight fire with fire, protect oneself.

it isn't wrong at all

Pushing someone away, especially someone indicating they wish to be physically affecting you in such a confrontational manner, is fine.  Presumably he told her to step away first and she declined.

You should never put your hands on another person.

There is always the option to turn around and walk away.

The notion that visiting an assault on someone I'd a valid action to prevent a possible assault is not adult reasoning, or behaviour.

If he couldn't reason with her, he should have stepped away.

Speaking as someone who is and was very capable of looking after myself the look on my face was generally enough male or female.

report him

yes, he should have just clumped her in the boat.

I once pulled a guy of a young girl outside a pub he was slapping her they both had, been in said pub his response was to threaten  me her response was dont hit him to which I  released my hold on him and said to her whatever turns you on and went on my merry way.

Boat=boat race=face.

London slang.

Women fight dirty, men need to do what they can lest they lose an eye over nothing.

The only person I have ever hit was an ex mother in law . My wife , her daughter was having affairs locally.  She rang me at work  saying come home to talk  . She was not at home found her at local pub with  bloke she was having sex with. Went home, she followed and we had an arguement. I went back to work, came home and her mother arrived. I politely asked to leave and we could talk about it later . I ushered  her towards the door and she went berserk , kicking, arms flaying . My wife tried to intervene but fell . I then saw her face in front of me and gave a straight left punch to her chin. I went upstairs to calm my  children came downstairs and the MIL was holding a bottle  .I rang the police .. Nothing ensued.  Note TO AH . You cannot walk away , especially in your own home .

As a (now non-practicing) judoka I would always step back if possible, unless I was touched, or there was an attempt to touch me bodily.

There isn't a right or wrong answer to this.  It must depend upon the circumstances.

"London slang."

Not London slang, Sandy. Cockney Rhyming slang. Not the same thing at all. I would imagine that  a large number of people living in London - almost certainly the majority of those living in the Inner London boroughs - would have no idea what a Cockney is, let alone have a grasp of their slang.

You can't turn around and walk away if you're trapped in a corner.  A gentle push on the shoulder is different from a hard shove in the gut or face.

Context is everything.

What I find so very hard to understand is why anyone tells you anything, Cindy

just me then ?

@13:02

It might be Essex slang now, if it hasn't faded out altogether.
