Girl, 14, with nut allergy nearly died on flight after man ate peanuts

Was he in the wrong?
Is it survival of the fittest or should her parents not put her at risk by sticking her in a tin capsule?

I've given this more thought and put the blame entirely on the parents. Yes, the man was a selfish buffoon but the parents were irresponsible knowingly putting their daughter in danger taking an unnecessary flight. They could have been seated next to a family who had stuffed themselves full of peanut butter sandwiches and peanut ice-cream whilst waiting...

He should have stopped eating them when he was told to by the cabin crew.
I think it was most selfish and irresponsible of the nut eater and they ought to have been made to eat them outside. That stated, it's the airlines themselves that provide these revolting smelling, revolting tasting packs, isn't it ? What does that say about them ?
I’ve been in a flight where the crew announced that because one passenger had an allergy, no nuts would be served. I don’t think anyone minded at all.
^ He was eating his own packet of nuts.
If the allergy was that much then she should not have been in such a s closed space as a plane.

Even if he stopped eating them I doubt it would have made any difference.

Unfortunately the world cannot stop to pander to the few.
Given that the guy was aware of the problem, he was at risk of ending up being charged with manslaughter:

As it is, the very least that should happen to him is that the airline should ban him for life from ever flying with them again.
Helen. If everyone behaved as he did I'd be confined to my home. I'd be miffed if I died what is actually a horrible death because someone wanted to eat peanuts close to me.
In that case, 237, having been made aware of the girl’s health issues, he’s a selfish, ignorant pig. Should be ashamed of himself.
Buenchico - that won't happen.
I can't remember the last time I was on a flight when the cabin crew didn't say we can't eat peanuts (ie they always say it). It's become an almost universal allergy. Yes the man was selfish but maybe so is the family. If you're liable to die in every day situations then avoid those situations.
I was on a flight where it was announced that nuts would not be on sale as one passenger had a nut allergy.
If the parents of the child had told the crew they may have taken steps to protect her.
If the nut man knew and continued eating he showed himself to be an inconsiderate so and so.
If he'd given the packet to a crew member to seal and take away, Youngmafbog, it would have made a difference. I know that and I know how far the dangers of an open bag of peanuts can travel.
Does the girl never go anywhere?

Pandering to a few? Well thank you. It wasn't necessary for him to eat peanuts now was it?
i know what i would have been tempted to do to his nuts . . .
Tough Gness.

If you have a problem you have to look after yourself. I am extremely allergic to cats it can trigger really bad asthma - which in extreme circumstances can kill (Yes, I have received emergency treatment).

I avoid cats, I dont expect others not to have them or keep them away from me.

Where were all the men on the flight that nobody stood up and sparked him out?
Like Naomi, I too have been on a flight where nuts weren’t served as someone had a bad allergy. If anyone is at fault, it’s the airline.
the parents are to blame, if you know your child is that allergic to something then do not take those chances for your own selfish reasons.
Do you not understand that her parents and the crew were trying to look after her, Youngmafbog? Unfortunately they came across someone like you it seems.

On that basis you could argue that businesses shouldn't have to bother about making their premises accessible to wheelchair users, or to work to accommodate the needs of blind or deaf customers, and that supermarkets shouldn't designate quieter periods to make life easier for people with autism. Fortunately the law now forces many of those adjustments upon businesses but should individuals need legislation before simply adopting a bit of common sense and consideration?

Some time ago a nursery school in Stowmarket has a prominent sign on the door, advising all visitors (whether parents of children or delivery staff etc) that entry was strictly banned to anyone who, for example, had recently used a nut-based shampoo on their hair. That was due to a child with an extreme nut allergy having a place at the school. I'm sure that everyone who had any form of contact with the school took great care to comply with their rules but, using YMB's logic, it seems that the child should never have been allowed on their roll in the first place!
