I am trying to find a family friend who used to live in Mayfield Avenue, Dalton, Huddersfield in the 1970s. Any ideas? Many thanks, Bramley.

Male or female? It can make a big difference because women are far more likely to change their surnames. The only one I know from that locale was the Branch family, dad was a butcher....
You could try writing to every address in the road asking if your friend is still there, or if anyone there now knows where they went.

Search on Facebook.

Did/do you know any relatives (or friends) of the person, who might be easier to trace than the actual person you're seeking? (e.g. if you're looking for Jane Taylor, who might have remarried and changed her name by now anyway, it might be a lot easier to search for her son Barnaby and then to ask him to put you in contact with his mother).

Have you tried 192.com?

(Not cheap but possibly worth it)

Have you considered writing a letter to the local paper, asking if anyone remembers the person and can put you in touch with them?

Hopefully Bramleyboy might remember the house number. If so, there'd be no need to write to all 42 houses in that street but, as well as writing to the old address, it might be worth asking the immediate neighbours. For example, many years after the people who moved into my parents' former home in Ipswich would have almost certainly lost their forwarding address, the people next door still had my parents on their Christmas card list (and so could have helped anyone who might have wanted to contact them).
