run virus /spyware/security scans in the background ?

can i run virus /spyware/security scans in the background whilst running other programmes/surfing online etc- or do i have to close all applications and just have the scan running, also can i run scans simultaeneously?

I use Ad-Aware, spybot and Norton and have never had a problem running these whilst using other programmes, although I don't surf the net as I don't want spyware added to my PC whilst the scan is in progress incase it gets missed! I've never tried running scans simultaneously although I don't reckon it'd be a problem.

You can run them simultaneously, but doing all of them at once may slow your computer down a bit.
