Thank God this has been opposed.

If we allowed this, children will be running riot in a few years, and a lot worse than it is now.

No wonder this Country has the worst % for underage sex, drugs, drink and violence in Europe.
We are to soft with kids today, that's why we have the Yob Culture.

Quote: Children's rights campaigners have said Government ministers should be ashamed, after a bid to ban smacking failed in the House of Commons without a vote.

Ministers opposed the cross-party move to outlaw all physical punishment of children by parents.

it is a disgrace no child should be subjected to physical chastisement by parents. slapping tends to be a parental response tp their own frustration at a childs behaviour. What does it teach children that it is ok to hit someone else?? that parents loose control of themselves??? surely it is better practice to talk to the child about why their behaviour is unacceptable and put in a sanction that has meaning and more likely to have an effect. Slapping a child means the slap hurts for 5 minutes and then they forget often why they got slapped however no tv for 3 days is likely to have more of an impact on children.
Besides where do you draw the line of when a slap is so severe and so often it is abuse?Or that it is ok to slap a young infant.
nah pinky i smack all my kids in the morning just in case!
I tend to agree with what pink's just said. Slapping only confirms the parent's inability to punish by other means, showing up their own frustrations.
However, I don't think lack of physical punishment's the reason behind much of today's kids behaviour. When children had at least one parent at home, instead of them being out at work all day, too tired to play or even bother with them, and who had parents who genuinely cared about their welfare and behaviour, things were a lot better.

What did Parents do years ago when there was no TV to punish them with.

Check the statistics of child crime now and 20/30 years ago, I think you will find a big difference?
i don't hit them with the TV ronny
just a gentle tap on the legs with a ruler.

Thank God somebody feels the same way ronni21.

I was brought up the same as you and proud to say I have never been in trouble with the law.
i think there are many reasons for kids going stray these days, and many reasons why there's a lot of bad parenting around. My children've been taught manners and to respect others, right from being little. They're now 8 and 10, and I can take them anywhere. Parents have to set an example as well.

ditto ice the other thing about todays children is that with increased economic succcess of parents children constsantly receive presents and so appreciate little and dont have to work towards a reward. gone are the days when childrens play was simple and imaginative . Nowadays childen have too much access to technology in the absence of parental supervision, too much access to money without proper parental control and parents who are too tired their parenting is inconsistent.
Whilst both parents may need to work the important thing for children is sthat the time spent with parents is of good quality and consistent. Too often parents over indulge children to compensate for not being available. These are the children who never understand the word no and by the time they are teenagers it is too late.
Underage sex has always been prevalent in society, the differnece now is people do not get married as young , single parenthood is not as frowned upon.
Years ago single parents where cast out to the country or convents and their babies adopted. Thank god them days are over and children have the chance to grow up with their biological families
ronni 21 are you ronni 44????
whilst their were no tv there was respect instilled with parents if you can not think of otherways to discipline as opposed to slap then your parenting is very limited. Children can be sent to their rooms, given chores no pocketmoney treats etc the list is endless
i have great kids too Icey .
although my 14 year old daughter surprised me the other day when she knocked over her pint of fosters, dropped her fag and burnt the carpet and then called a cnut and blamed me .
