How do opticians know what shape lens to make?

How do opticians know what shape lens to make to fit rimless and semi-rimless glasses? Do they have a template? Do they have a database of frames? Or do they just guess?

I wear rimless lens and I had a choice of the shape and size of the lens.
I had a pair of rimless glasses that I needed new lenses for. I took them to an optician and although they didn`t have any lenses the same size, they said that was no problem - they would just cut them to match the ones I had. That was in Hong Kong though - I can`t see Specsavers being so accommodating.
They will use a machine to trace the lenses you have or the frame shape depending on rimless/supra/full frame. The glazing machine will then cut them. Job done.
