My hubby is being made redundant and was wondering how job seekers allowance works, as I am sure we will not get any other benefits, other than a slight increase in working tax credit.

Is he likely to get the payment of 62.50, and does he get anything else for the children, we have 2?

Thanks

Hi

Yes I work 35 hours a week.
your husband may be entitled to contributory Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) for himself only, but your working hours mean that he will not be entitled to Income Based JSA.

you're probably already get Working Families Tax Credits, and you should inform them of the change as that benefit may increase.
With the hours you are working your WTC should be increased by that approx amount.

Go to www.hmrc.gov.uk

They have a calculator. Put your details in and it'll tell you how much you are entitled to.

Not sure about any other help.

Thanks for your replies, I'll have a look at the suggestions.
My condolences mifta, my husband is in the same position. Horrible, isn't it?
As Sara3 indicates, your husband will probably be entitled to Contribution-Based JSA, which is not 'means tested' However it's important to note that it only lasts for 6 months. Thereafter some people are transferred to the means-tested Income-Based JSA but your working hours will exclude your husband from this.

There's no provision, under the JSA system, for making additional payments because the claimant has children but, as Sara also suggests, you can probably get more through your tax credits.

Chris
exact same has happened to me im a joiner and gutted.
I get the impression your husband has been given compulsory redundancy so there will be some JSA entitelemnt as described above. However sometimes redundancies are dressed up/offered as voluntary redundancy. If it was classed as voluntary redundancy then i don't think JSA applies
