A while back I took out a personal pension plan and opted out of serps . A few years later i went through a divorce an could not afford to carry on with the pension plan and cancelled it , am I automatically back in serps?

SERPS ended in April 2002
............ and it was overtaken by the State Second Pension - which offered some advantages to some income groups and less to others.
You can check with the Pension Service whether you are contracted in (you should have been automatically put back in when your contracted-out period ended).
