Hi

My father who lives overseas ( for 20 years), has recently sold some old shares he had from when he was a UK resident.

The cheque has arrived via our home address and is a/c payee only and payable to him.

The problem is he does not have a UK bank account anymore and he wants to cash it ready for his annual visit to the UK in 2 weeks.

I know the laws are tight on money laundering etc, but is there any legitimate way he can cash this cheque?

Many thanks in advance.

Surely he can bank it in his foreign account? You can certainly bank foreign currency cheques in sterling accounts in the UK.

There will be charges for doing so of course and depending on the value of the cheque it might not be worth it but I'm presuming from the implication in the question that it's not for a few quid. It may also take more than a fortnight to process doing it that way of course even if he does already physically have the cheque rather than it being with you in the UK. It's not clear in your question where it physically is. Obviously if it's with you there would also be time lost posting it out to him.

Hi

Thanks for that. It looks like I will have to send him the cheque and he can deposit it over there. He lives in the far east, in a city that has dire postal services so I doubt whether he will recieve it before he comes home, let alone cash it.

He just wanted some extra to spend whilst he was over, but never mind.

If anyone has any other ideas I would be grateful.

Thanks

He could open a current account, the RBS do one without monthly banking fees. Go onto RBS international site and you can download the application form and send it off to Jersey. He then cashes his cheque, as you get a debit card and a cheque book. Hope this helps.
