A new shop has opened near me which claims to 'cash cheques with no credit checks'. What does this mean? If you're given a cheque, will they cash it for you so you don't have to go to the bank and wait?

Yes they will - for a hefty fee.
Agree with Ethel - they will cash any cheque but take a large percentage of the value as their fee. So unless you are really desperate, it just isn't worth it.
These organisations are more useful to folks with overdrawn bank accounts that don't want the bank to extract their money immediately a cheque is paid in.
I dont understand how it works though. If you have a cheque made out to you, how can they cash it?
