Came across a webiste the other day saying that one in three peolpe were overpaying income tax and those horrible people at the revenue did not tell us about it and we should all be claiming refunds. I tapped in my P60 details and lo and behold it suggested I may well be entitled to a tax refund and they could handle the whole thing free of charge for me.
Anyone know what is going on here? Are there refunds to be claimed by the thousand ? and if it is free, what have I got to lose by applying through the website ? Advice please !!!

Do you have the website details and I can take a closer look? You can claim your own rebate by simply asking the tax office. They would need more than the details from your P60 to see if you were entitled to a refund, so be wary, especially if you are giving out a lot of personal detail from your P60.

I'd be really interested to have the site details and I could give you better opinion.

Thanks Jedimiss
The website is called www.refundsdirect.co.uk. You input some brief details, they then " check " to see if you may be eligible and then offer you the chance to download a claim pack. They take their cut out of any sucessful refund yopu get .
Would be grateful of any help or advice if you have time to look at it ! When I get my thousands back I will buy you a lavish prezzie !
If you are entitled to a refund you can claim it back from the tax office for free - why pay 21% of it over to a third party?

The most likely reasons for being owed a refund are:

not working at the end of the tax year
wrong tax code in use at end of tax year
an allowance you haven't claimed

If you really can't be bothered to DIY they do look to be offering a legitimate service though.

I'd advise you go to your Tax Office or call them, and do it for free. No point in paying the company as that isa ll they will do. The Tax Office are helpful and do not deliberately hold back taxes.
