My brother in Kent has just been informed by his property management company that his Landlord is increasing the rent on his house rental. He currently pays £1200 per calendar month and the rent is increasing to £1600 pcm. He has been there for 5 and 1/2 years with no rent increases. This seems a little excessive to me. Does anybody know how he stands legally? Many thanks....(i'll also post this in Law- Civil)

I had a quick look online, at a Citizens Advice Website. The info there said that the landlord had to obey certain rules, governed by the type of tenancy involved. There was online help to check this. The website did also mention that details of any possible increases are usually included in the orirginal tenancy agreement - so maybe your brother could check...

I don't think it is excessive as there has been no increase for 5.5 years.

Thanks Ladybirder but I'm wondering how does he stand from a legal perspective.

Thanks NAC - good advice, I'll have a look...
There is no max figure for rent increases
My own landlord increased mine 23% stating she hadn’t previously increased it.
The housing charity, Shelter, is an excellent source of information and advice:
