At a guess, your cheque will simply sit in their "What the hell do we do with this?" pile until you contact them to get your problem rectified. (Realistically, there's not much else that they could do with it, is there?).

Have a word with the counter staff at the Post Office branch where you paid the cheque in. I'm sure that you won't be the first person with such a problem, so there must be a solution to it.

(Just for future reference though: If you've got a smartphone, and put your bank's app onto it, you can probably pay in cheques simply by photographing them. You definitely can with the Barclays app, anyway).
Did you also your debit card? If so, shouldn't be a problem.
Did you put anything in with it that would identify you?

I've only paid a cheque in once via the Post Office - apparently I should have included a slip with it - which neither I nor the Post Office had.

If I remember right - the Post Office entered the cheque onto their system - and about a month later it was finally paid in to my account.

Never again!
They'll sort it out eventually, as long as they're not too pist.
If it was a Natwest envelope then you should have put the sort code , account number and amount in the boxes on the front of the envelope. The cheque would have your name on it so although you didn't put a paying in slip inside, I can't see there being much of a problem. If you mean that you put it in an ordinary envelope then sorry I don't know what will happen.
My Co-op envelopes have a box on the front for your sort code and account number so they should just pay it into that account.

yeah - come on chris, send it to the payer's bank ( details there) and say that they failed to pay it in...

which happened to me
You can enquire at the P O you gave it in, they may have a procedure to deal with mistakes like this.
As others have said with my bank you have to write the account number etc on the envelope for the post office to give you a receipt did they do this for you?
If so it will still get paid in but will just take longer
It will need a little out of the box thinking by staff at the other end. But don't bank on it.
If you have a common name such as Jane Smith, and did not put any details on the outside of the envelope, the bank will have problems trying to identify the correct account to credit.
I would be inclined to request the Drawer to have the cheque 'stopped' and to issue you with a replacement.
