Is there a limit on how much cash you can pay into your bank account in one transaction? I have been trying to phone the bank but too many in the queue. Thanks for any help.

I think there's a limit of something like £3,000 per transaction - any more and proof of where it comes from is needed to avoid money laundering etc

no limit but they will ask you to explain where it come from over a few thousand pounds. in brainiac's link the guy did not have a receipt or any way to show where it came from. That's money laundering precautions not a limit. I too sold a bike for £6500 and when I paid that in I produced a picture of the V5 transfer on line and the itself. they took the money.
