Following on from the last post on the above, if a husband and wife have a joint account and one of them needs to go into care - is half the money given to the care home, bearing in mind they do have savings of over £16,000.

Money is never "given to the care home" if someone has over the allowed amount they will need to self fund until their resources are under the allowed amount. Joint bank accounts in the Uk can be treated as though the funds belong equally to all the bank account holders BUT there are exceptions. https://www.carehomeselection.co.uk/joint-bank-account-pay-husband-wifes-care/
Wasn't there some Tory pledge or something about letting people keep their homes when it came to care costs ?
covid kind of got in the way I think. I am not sure that is fair anyway.
here's the quote. Note it talks about "social care" and not about "residential care" and the commitment is to cross party agreement and not unilateral action.

Been married twice, total 41 years, never seen the need for a joint account, having said that have always shared the bills
