Hi folks, my wife's NI contributions over the last 7 years have fallen short ranging from £90 to £780. We understand we can pay the shortfalls after being in touch with hmrc who gave us sort codes etc to send it to from our building society. However we read on which.co.uk who suggest its best to pay the ones least owed first in order to complete those full years first. How do we let hmrc know which years we want to pay off first! My wife is 57 by the way, not state retirement yet! T I A.

Is there nothing on the government site https://www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record ?

Shows how much I know. I would have assumed it was an accumulated sum owed rather than kept in specific years.

Thanks, ive checked it over but doesn't cover that enquiry. We are going to call hmrc up again to clarify what to do, just a bit long winded tho. Cheers.
