Tried to sort out Dave's bank today but because I don't have anything on their acceptable I.d. list I can't close his account. The only thing I can do is apply for a passport, but that costs more than is left in the account. I just don't want correspondence coming to the flat.. Any ideas.

Did you speak to their bereavement department, Rowan or just the bank folk?
Poor you one issue after another. Was it the bank who said get a passport? Only because the docs/ID you would need to get a passsport are most likely the same.
excellent point gness.....I found that "ordinary" customer services in quite a few places, while polite and appropriate in their approach, were not of much practical help.
They sound unhelpful. I thought a death certificate would be enough to get it closed. Not sure why your I'd matters although they may need probate before they can do more
Don't speak to the local joe at the Bank, they won't help. As suggested try to find their bereavement department.

Alternately just redirect all post back to them. Eventually they will get the message.
Which bank?
Rowan, send a copy of the death cert to the bank addressed to the Bereavement Dept. i would suggest

Dear Sirs
Re Dave Smith
Formerly of 10 Acacia Ave, Anytown
Date of death: 20 June 2018
Account No: 123456

I am administering the estate of my late husband who died on 20 June 2018. I enclose a certified copy of the death certificate for noting in your records and return, please. My husband died intestate and I am on the only beneficiary/my husband left a Will dated * which appoints me the sole executrix and beneficiary. I do not propose to obtain a Grant of letters of Administration in view of the size of his estate.

My husband held an account with you numbered 123456. Please would you arrange to close this account and forward the balance to me. Please also provide details of any income over the last year and whether any tax has been deducted.

Yours

Now, they may just send you a cheque or they may ask you to fill in another form. I had mixed results when I was administering Mr BM's dad's estate. That letter worked with some (ie cheque just sent) but rather irritatingly not with one.

Started off with the Bereavement team, they told me to go into the local branch with the will, death cert and id and my account details so they could transfer the remaining funds, they cant close the account until it has a zero balance. The council tax bill was ok for address but I don't have the photo i.d. and birth cert and provisional licence are only acceptable for under 18s. They would accept a recent notice of PAYE coding but I cant register for HMRC account online without a passport or Driving licence. As I haven't worked for nearly 6 years this might not be possible anyway

HSBC
My mother in law had the same problem when her husband died. In the end she had to get solicitors involved as she was just like you, no id and not worked. Took 2 months and of course they took their share.

Finally got through to HMRC they are sernding the PAYE coding doc. two to three weeks. Lucky it isn't urgent, Still I will probably need it for his post office account too.

I think I will get a passport anyway, saves so much bother and I might want to go to Scotland after they get independence
It will have expired by then

True, still saves so much hassle having I D I used to have one a few years and some radical name changes ago
How annoying. When I executed my Mother's Will the bank (Lloyds) made me an appointment with their Probate expert who was most helpful. It can be (and usually is) a painful task in more ways than one sorting out inheritance matters.

I found my local Probate Service Helpline sadly lacking incidentally - I was passed from one "expert" to another and the eventual "yes" sounded more like a last-ditch effort to get rid of me than a convincing response.

I hope you get it sorted without any more hassle.
