Just got fined £12.00 for not paying my credit card on time. My fault. No excuse. Never happened before. Won’t ever happen again, but do many of you set up a standing order to pay it off without checking each receipt?
Is it leaving me open to being conned?
Am just thinking that if I had to go into hospital for some time, would it make it easier to set something like this up?

I pay after checking.

If you know you are going into hospital, it's unlikely you will be spending on your card I would think.
I have a direct debit on some of my cards - they always tell me exactly what/when they will be taking in plenty of time for me to check the bill (& stop the DD payment if necessary).
We pay it off monthly but have an arrangement that if we don't they'll take a monthly payment of £50.

We only use it for the extra insurance it gives you.

That sounds like a sound idea.
I set mine up to be paid by Direct debit. Saves having to remember to log on and pay it. You can see the statements online and some still come by post so I can check mine. If there was incorrectentry (not happened for years) I'd make sure there was an adjustment made
I worded my answer wrong. Our CC is on 0% interest so we set up a monthly dd. They asked for £5 and we paid £50. We only use it for holidays.
I pay mine manually, hate direct debits and standing orders.
My credit card is paid off every month directly from my bank account and I get a full statement every month. Never had any problems.
Yes, I have one of those ummmm- interest free for 3 years. I just pay a small amount by DD each month and will step it up nearer the end of the term. Meanwhile the £3000 or so initial balance is getting interest in a 3% pa savings account. Small profit really but it's satisfying
Credit cards can be crazy. They offered us 15k. I lowered it for obvious reasons.
This is Nationwide btw...
I pay the balance automatically by DD but the statement comes out long before the payment, so plenty of time to check the statement, all on line.
Nationwide advised us (in person) to not use internet banking.
Jenny, if it's the first time then ring them up and grovel, I did that once when I forgot and they let me off. (Barclaycard)
Nationwide advised you to not use their internet banking ummmm? Why ever not?
I wonder why they don't advise internet banking....is it because its a service they don't offer?
Jenny, I also got a fee waived by ringing up. I had inadvertently paid late for the first time in a big number of years. A human being can assess how you normally run your account whereas a computer can't.
It's not a case of being "fined". You didn't abide by their T&C so have to take the flak. Simple.

Thank you all. Lots of very useful advice.
it happened to me one Christmas when my cheque was held up in the mail. I immediately switched all credit card payments to direct debits.

I can check my payments online as I go, if I want.
