not really sure where I should be posting this question, but thought I'd try "Law" first.

My stepfather in law has just died (he was 98) and my mother in law- his wife - is trying to get a copy of the death certificate, so she can start claiming her widow's pension and she will have to have a copy to prove to the DWP that she is now a widow. She is currently estranged from her stepchildren (long story) but there must be a death certificate, because the burial has now taken place. Does anyone know where she can get hold of a copy, please ..... any suggestions much appreciated. Cheers, Chox.

Town hall. I believe they are public records. She might have to pay for it. It was £10 to get a copy of my childs birth cert. And she/you can do it online...
wherever the death was registered ..most local office probably
Try the General Register Office. www.gro.gov.uk . You need dates of birt and death and full name.
When a next of kin registers the death they get a copy of the death certificate which is required by the undertaker. The person obtaining the death certificate can have as many copies as they are prepared to pay for..
indeed jom, but from the OP, it seems like those copies are in the hands of the stepchildren who won’t hand one over.....
I think ou should write to one of the estranged step children the one that arranged the funeral and ask for a copy of the death certificate....

you dont have to say why

thanks for all your help folks. Rang the local town hall, and requested a couple of copies of the DC for my mother in law. They said it would take at least 5 working days, but the copies arrived in this morning's post, less than 24 hours later! Amazing service - and the staff at the Register office were very helpful. Mother in law is delighted. Cheers again, Chox.
