If I order something from India on CIF terms, what do I have to do to clear it - I understand the incoterms etc but not sure about the practicalities involved with getting from the port, through customs to my delivery address

This isn't my area of expertise but I don't like to see a question left unanswered, so I'll suggest phoning HMRC's Excise and Customs Helpline to see if they can advise you. The number is 0300 200 3700 and the service is available from 0800 to 1800, Monday to Friday.
