As A Country Are We Mad !!!!!

Just caught a bit of "Saints and Scroungers" on BBC1 (I try not to watch it as I get angry at the number of immigrants and asylum seekers who are here fiddling the system). But it happened to be on when I came in the room today.

The section I saw was about a man who claimed he was from Iraq (or Afghanistan cant remember exactly) who came here claiming asylum, saying his father had been shot by the Taliban.

He also claimed to have a severe disability (so he could claim more benefits) and the local council spent thousands putting in hoists and other facilities to help someone who is severely disabled.

Eventually he was caught out by the authorities (but not until he had cost this country thousands in benefits and other costs like converting his flat).

They found a cupboard stuffed with unused "disabled" equipment, that would help him walk and help with other mobility movements, all sitting in a cupboard unused.

Turns out he was not from Iraq (or wherever) but was from Morocco.

It also turns out that both his parents were from Morocco, were both alive, and living in London, AND BOTH LIVING ON BENEFITS.

I sometimes think this country is seen as some sort of "holiday camp" by immigrants and asylum seekers. And we let them get away with it.

How on earth can people come here from Morocco and spend their life living on benefits!

I am retired now, but why on earth did I go to work for more than 40 years, paying high taxes, to help pay benefits for people from Morocco.

It annoys me that we are reducing benefits for disabled people with a spare bedroom, and then paying out benefits to people from morocco and paying to convert a flat for an asylum seeker when a simple check would have shown he was not disabled (though I am pleased someone is doing something about the cost of housing benefits at last).

We really do need to get MUCH tougher on benefit abuse, even more so for people who just turn up on our doorstep and tell lies about their situation back home.

This country is billions in debt, we have millions on the dole, we have people who are having to take pay cuts, or being made redundant.

Yet we still seem, happy to pay out benefits to people from Morocco, who have probably never contributed a penny to this country.

Madness.

p.s. I know someone will say this man was eventually caught. That is good, but why were no checks done on his disability before doing all the work.

And how many more are there who have NOT been caught and are still fiddling the system.

Yes.
Sorry, didn't see your last paragraph I was too annoyed.
Yes, completely raving!
however, our right on liberal friends will be along in a minute to explain why we must give handouts to all and sundry!

repeating what? show me a previous example.
I had to jump through hoops (not literally!) to be able to claim DLA. They contacted my doctor and consultant and I had to have medical by an independent doctor. How on earth do foreigners get away with just saying they are disabled?

Probably because everything is reduced to just paperwork. The person responsible for making the decision only sees a name on a file. If it's a remotely non-British sounding name, they become immediately afraid of doing the 'wrong thing'. Any hint of racism and they're on the fast train to sackville.

Most are asylum seekers costing this country hundreds of millions cause we cant be botherd to check them out. I have work't 57 year and they are getting more money and benefits than me
The majority of Benefit Fraud is carried out in areas of high population, this is no coincidence.
It is because the various agencies responsible of awarding benefits are under-staffed/over-whelmed by the sheer volume of applications.
It is simply not possible to treat every applicant with suspicion from the start. It would lead to unacceptable delays in processing all claims and cause grave hardship to the genuine claimants; and let's not forget, genuine claimants are by far the majority of all applications made.
The Investigative Sections of all the agencies are reliant on 'intelligence' from a variety of sources, to alert them to possible abuses of the system.

Whilst I agree with the OP, we're too damn soft on 'em,
redvanman, I note you've worked for 57 years, which means you've had
57 years to sort out your retirement income,
why didn't you?
Until we get a Government who has some balls this will continue happening. As TTT points out it is our right-on liberal minority who shout so loud Governments think they speak for the country. Any hint of racism and there they are (and plenty on this predominantly left wing site)

They dont speak for the majority and they also won't win any party the election.
I sometimes wonder if folk pass the council job interview by being the type of person that likes to spend public money, rather than being prudent and thrifty. They can then pretend to hold the moral high ground helping out those who claim to be in need, with our tax money, and support/encourage each others' "be generous" view on things. Surely checking a claim is the least that should be done.
Baldric not every job has a pension scheme , it quite possible to work your entire life and end up with just the basic state pension . Things are getting better now but it is very recent that pensions have been compulsory.
Isn't that Camoron's Compassionate Conservatism he boasted about so much at the last general election ?

Not that One-Nation Labour will address the problem any more diligently.
///Baldric not every job has a pension scheme///
I do realise that Eddie,
I'm 62, been working since 16, still working now,
when I retire I will not be reliant on the state pension
because I planned not to be!
Baldric. A lot of people work darned hard to make ends meet on a week to week basis. If you've managed to secure a comfortable 'nest-egg' good luck to you. Not every-one is in that position.
