I have been sorting out old necklaces, rings and earrings, some broken, gold and silver ones, which I am keen to sell while the prices are at their highest level.... What are the pitfalls? How can a company be trusted and how do you know you are not being ripped off?

What is the current price of gold (mainly 9 carat) and silver 925 please, I have looked on the internet and get all kinds of differing prices.

Has anyone sold through a reputable company? we have a firm coming to a hotel in our town this week, to buy gold and silver, who have a business in Mayfair, London. Not sure what to do ............

Do you go around getting estimates then dotty before you decide to sell?
I've taken jewellery round our local jewellers but they buy gold and silver by weight, so the prices are very similar. I wouldn't send it to one of those companies in the mail. You could check out your jewellers (just ask what they'd pay you IF you wanted to sell) before going to the hotel and doing the same. I'd shop around.
Go round some local jewellers and find out what price they are paying.
i don't see why you can't but if you weigh them at home and get a good idea of the weight most jewellers have a sign in their window or even outside sometimes saying how much an ounce they pay. moneysaving expert have advice on it

Stay local.
If you have a gold bullion dealer locally (our nearest is in Southport town centre) you should get a good deal - they will probably buy in from local jewellers, whose terms to the public will include a margin of profit.

Thanks dotty, ummm and Boxie, I will do that. OH told me he saw a compamy being investigated for rip off prices for buying gold, on Fake Britain programme the other day. I'm very wary ...................

When I google for the current prices per gm or oz - why are they all so different?
Hang on to it if you possibly can. Prices will go a lot higher yet.

How do you know Georgiesmum? Someone told me they had peaked .....
gold is not being mined like it used to be and recycling is the norm now, same with silver.

Today I can get ( per gram):-
Gold
£12.12 = 9k
£13.37=10k
£18.76=14k
£19.93=15k
£24.05=18k
£26.43=20k
£29.69=22k
£32.41=24k
Silver
Sterling .925= 37p
so aim for somewhere in that ballpark area.
I'm very sorry to hijack your thread for a minute, Ann, but I've just seen NOX appear. He was so very kind to me when I was depressed, I wondered if he'd like a song on the Mamya thread. I don't know his taste in music, so can't oblige.
Oh thank you my lovely- it was my pleasure, I have had my own issues with depression so...
My taste in music is very diverse, but I'm listening to Radical Face at the moment, my favourites being ' Wrapped in Piano Strings' and ' Welcome Home':)
I'm very glad you've answered, NOX! Sometimes people leave me messages on here and I don't see them until they are pointed out to me, days later. I'll go now and try and find your songs.
I have sold through a company called Lois in the Birmingham jewellery quarter they were really helpful to the point of highlighting which items would have a higher value sold separately

at the time I sold they were offering some of the best prices and I would gladly use them again
Last week, I took a collection of bits of jewellery to The Money Shop in our local town. I got £285 for things I never wear or were broken.
I then went to a jewellers and put the money down as a deposit for some pink sapphire and diamond earrings. My husband will pay the rest when he goes in to buy them for me for Christmas. I will wear them.
I did go to three 'gold buyers and they were all more or less the same.
When you go to the Money Shop, if you have one, you need to take your passport for I.D.

Thanks for all your helpful advice x
If you go to Hatton Garden in London, Go to Cooksons Metals.
They give market prices.
I have sold via them several times.
On my first trip to Hatton Garden ...
Went into a small shop and chap offered me £250 for my gold.
Walked into Cooksons next door and got £375 market rate.

Google Cooksons for market rates and compare with them.
