My fiance wants my name added to his bank account enabling us to have the joint account.  Does anyone know what evidence etc they may want, as many many years ago I had defaulted on something, would they want proof that this was actually paid.

Cheers

Proof of address and identity. You are both liable for misuse of the account, so the bank is not quite so worried about what you can do with the money - they can always go after your partner. After a few years the default would not count in credit scoring, but you can always get a certificate of ssatisfaction from the county court (if you were tsken to court over the debt) or a letter from your creditor. If you arte turned down the bank must tell you why and give you the address of the credit reference agency they used and how to check your details with them.

Defaults will stay on your CAIS information for 6 years - it may not show anymore. They will (as Garriq says) ask for proof of id / address typically a driving licence and recent utility bill.

Contrary to what Garriq says, however, if they do turn you down, they will not tell you why but give you details of the credit reference agency they have used.

Remember, credit is a priveledge not a right, and their decision is a commercial one. Also, they will not tell you how you have 'scored' badly in a credit rating as next time, you may lie to manipulate your score.

They will tell you why - the stock answer is probably printed in the info leaflet they'll give you "failed to satisfy our credit scoring" etc certainly no more detailed than that.. But don'y be tempted to check you credit rating yourself. The companies generally record each enquiry, no matter who it is from, and so you end up making your score worse.
they will not take a mobile phone bill as prof of address,
Some banks don't run an additional credit search when you convert an account from single to joint. They should but some don't so you may get access to "his" overdraft of 4000 even though you are a bad debtor.
Obviously all of this is hypothetical - I'm not making any comment on you personally, just that there's a potential loophole here that works to your advantage.

If your default IS paid, then the credit search would be proof of this. If not, then by all rights you may not be entitled to credit and may be denied.
