In December I paid off my credit card balance. I am paperless billing so have not checked subsequent statements because as far as I was concerned the balance was zero.

This week I received a notice of arrears letter. Apparently my payment in December was 4 days late so I was charged additional interest and also a late payment fee. I have also been charged late fees for Jan and Feb.

I contacted them but was given no help whatsoever.
My issue is that the website option was pay FULL balance with no warning that additional interest or late fees may be applicable.

I have to pay the amount outstanding and with hindsight should have checked my January statement but are they really not liable at all?

matt,
how did you pay and was payment really that late?

I paid off a CC in full a year or so back. I actually called them and asked for final payment figure and closed account at same time as paying it. A month later they sent a bill for interest following last statement date. I made many calls, always asking to speak to someone further up the chain of command until, eventually, i was asked what i wanted them to do about it. I said i wanted the balance written off and thats what i got. I did pay on time though, and had asked for settlement figure 9wasnt my fault the guy i spoke to didnt give an up to date one)
hmm they may well have said "pay it off" but they most probably said "pay it off by xxxx date"
Egg did that to me, I asked for a settlement figure, paid it there and then by debit card and then they charged me £57 the next month. I rang and complained, paid it anyway and then had a refund of £70 because they had overcharged me!
Hi- when someone signs up for paperless billing the onus is on them to check for any bills due and pay bills by the due date.
A good tip is to sign up to pay teh minimum payment automatically by DD.
You'd better pay up quickly before the amount due escalates, or at least try to negotiate a settlement
