You have to apply and the application form can be downloaded from the internet. Google "Winter Fuel Allowance"
You need to apply...but they have moved the goalposts a bit :-(

You don't have to apply if you fulfill the conditions as listed on the site I linked to above. As I said... all the information you need to get the benefit is on that site, it is the official DWP site.
you need to apply the first time, that's what the site says!!!!
Yes you do have to apply the first time, after that it gets automatically paid at the same time each year.
I never applied, it just appeared in my bank account......
we didn't either craft, I think it is for the people on benefits , the form?
I once got £60 for my LA for winter fuel because I look after an elderley person - I myself am many years away from Winter fuel age
You have to be 60 before a date in September to qualify.

Thanks for all your input, it seems i won't get any this year, as you have to have been born on or before 5 july 1950, i take it that this date alters year by year??
Strange that some had to claim and not others, I had a form in with my state pension information pack just before my 60th birthday and just completed it and returned it, never been on benefits.
I get it, I've never been on benefits, anyone over 60 gets it.
correction - everyone is entitled to claim for it, unless those listed exceptions apply! My birthday's in December so I missed out that year as you have to be 60 by mid-September of each qualifying year.
I got a letter saying it would be paid after I turned 60 never had to apply
The eligibility of BOTH men AND women for pension credits, free bus travel and the winter fuel allowance is based upon when a WOMAN becomes eligible for her state pension.

Use the calculator here, entering your gender as 'Female' (even if you're a fella), to find out when you become eligible for those benefits:
http://www.pensionsad...nsion-age-calculator?

However (unlike the other benefits referred to) there is a cut-off date for the Winter Fuel Payment. You need to have reached the (woman's) pension age by the 3rd Monday in September in order to qualify for the forthcoming winter.

I am 78 and my husband is 80. how much winter fuel payment should we receive:
-- answer removed --
You should automatically get as long as you are 60 and in receipt of a state pension before 1st September. Well I did!
Is it mid September Boxtops. I stand corrected. I knew it was September. Those born after the cut off date in September have to wait until the next year.

I am not on benefits and I never applied.
