Hi
This might sound like a stupid question but a few years ago about 3 my marriage ended abruptly after only 2 months and for personal reasons I had to move back to australia even before I was divorced. Before we got married we opened up an joint account as far as I remember we opened the account with the Halifax but I cant be 100% sure as I never used the account only my Barclay's account and it was opened really as proof we where in genuine relastionship so he could get a visa to come live in Aus with me.

I never went to the bank to shut the account down and need to find out if it is still open. I dont know if being a joint account my ex husband could shut the account down without me? Is there anyway of finding out if the account is still active as I am worried it could be building up bank fees or something. If I do a credit check on myself will this bring up all my accounts that are active? I would phone the Halifax but I am in australia I dont have any paper work relating to this account and I am not even 100% sure it is the halifax.

If I can finf out through a credit check can anyone reccomend a good online company?
Many Thanks in advance.

Hi Amanda,

1. If the account is in joint names then both account holders need to write in and request for the account to be closed. The bank/building society needs the consent of both account holders.

The other point is that if it is appearing on your credit report, then any adverse credit on the account will impact your credit score.

2. The link below is to help find dormant accounts and should help....

http://www.bba.org.uk/bba/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1 44

It helped me find a sving account of mine some 20 years later with a fortune of ...wait for it...drum roll....3pence!!!

Good luck and hope this post will be of help.
