What is the difference between a Visa debit card and a Visa Electron card?

An electron card ALWAYS requires electronic authorisation, a plain debit card doesn't. For that reason you may be unable to use an electron card in a mobile situation where the merchant can't verify you have the funds for the purchase.

I think that's the right way round.
