Just been for an eye test today as Vision Express.

As I am more than happy to keep my current stylish glasses, I only want the lens replaced. They have quoted me £200 for the anti-scratch, anti-reflective coating, anti-mist etc - this lens will be the thinest.

Then the second quote was for £140 for all of the above but lens is slightly thicker.

I would just like to know whether this is a reasonable fee for lens replacement?

Thanks in advance.

high street opticians make most of their money out of the sale of frames/lenses.

have you obtained some alternative quotes from other outlets / non-high street opto's? that would be the best way to ascertain reasonable value.

Hi Ankou - yes that's what I was thinking of doing, but thought I would ask on here first.
I enter my prescription into the glasses direct website. Just had a lovely pair (and the second I have had from them) delivered at a cost of £39 and will also get more back as purchased through quidco. You can put your choices in as you go for type of lens, but I just go for the basic standard package which is absolutely fine and is included in the frame price.
should have gone to Specsavers !!!!

LOL..Murraymints - yes, maybe that's what I'll do. Hee-hee
Are they single-vision lenses? At that price, they sound more like good quality varifocals. And I know that you can save lots by buying online, but that's something (like buying shoes online or mail-order) that I just wouldn't do.

They are single vision. I don't want to purchase online as it would may take alot longer.
I think I would go to see what price Specsavers and an independent could offer. I think Specsavers are OK with fitting into current frames, but will charge a re-glazing fee.
Just to reassure you that glasses direct are extremely quick in delivering......
Ouch! It's something I need to look into as well as need to get mine changed. I've been with Specsavers for a while and they aren't bad on prices and I get a discount as I'm on their direct debit for contacts.

I paid extra for a thinner lens and anti scratch last time though can't say the anti scratch has made much difference, if anything I've never had glasses which have got so scratched. Will also reconsider the thinner lens, as my prescription is higher the lenses still stick out a bit at the back anyway as I like thinner rimmed glasses.

I went looking with a friend recently for hers and she tried some independant places which seemed a lot cheaper and places like the larger Asdas seem to do them as well. Definitely going to shop around so will be interested in hearing where you find the best value.
