As one who is often castigated for lord mayoring I feel I should mention this quote from the great Stephen Fry: ""Swearing is a really important part of one's life and it would be impossible to imagine going through life without swearing and without enoying swearing
there used to be mad, silly, prissy people who would say swearing is a sign of a poor vocabulary as such; utter nonsense! The people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies!"

There are times when i need to swear and sometimes an alternative word just doesn't have the same effect ....

It depends on the context. I can't bear it when swearing is routinely used, it's just a a habit, f-ing this, and f-ing that. Time and place for everything.
"it a sign of an exhausted vocabulary?"

Of course it's fu***ng not ... ;-)

Seriously though, I swear a lot and am always completely understood.

You have to know when it's right to swear and you'd hope sensible adults would have some control.

There's only one swear-word filtered on my forum, the members are all adults and don't swear 200 times in one sentence. The odd f 'n' b is perfectly acceptable.

Some sites are word-filtered beyond comprehension .... right, Ed? I know this is because the ''immature'' members/trolls will simply abuse the priviledge.
yes i agree Feck off gets straight to the point.

no point saying thank you. i find your poor vocabulary very insulting.
I couldn't agree more Geezer...I know someone who really emphasizes every swearword, and that somehow comes across as vulgar. Whereas listening to my OH swearing at the computer everytime he loses a hand of poker is funny.

It all depends on the context it's said in.
I always thought that there was no need to swear to get your message across!........but I now know that sometimes it's the only way they understand!.......how sad!..................

One of my greatest pleasures after a row with the old man is Flouncing out of the door after slamming it hard and shouting "B0LL0cks"

I don't really swear much otherwise.

swearing is fine, its the tone of voice you use that's insulting.

Only feck off, pinkilady? I am glad you did not use the other F word then!
Swearing really equates to lack of vocabulary, conversing with those of a lower class in a language that they can understand/relate to or anger and loss of control or am I missing the point?
I`d also say Good riddance after the`d fecked off.
"Swearing really equates to lack of vocabulary... "

Well EXCUUUUUUUUUSE us, lol :-)
I dont normally swear at anyone, its the using of the swear word when i am muttering to myself afterwards that gives me an emotional release
No Martin. The worst person I knew for swearing was my Accountant. Highly educated and upper class and as funny as fcuk :-)

Here in Suffolk the F-word somehow manages to sound far less offensive when pronounced with a Suffolk accent. It's not uncommon to hear both men and women saying things like
"I darn farkin new whart thingsa farkin cummin tew. Oi went dewn farkin tarn, to dew sum farkin sharpin, an thay aint got farkin nutton there!"
;-)
